Chinese President Vows New Progress in Ties with Russia

(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping declared Wednesday his commitment to "push for continuous new progress" in relations with Russia.

Xi delivered the statement through a New Year greeting message exchanged with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a state-controlled news agency reported.

Within his communication, Xi characterized 2025 as a year that "marks a concrete step in the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era," the report indicated.

His comments emerged following Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's assertion that Moscow opposes "any form of independence" for Taiwan.

In statements provided to a Russian state outlet and published Sunday, Lavrov described his nation's stance on the Taiwan matter as "well-known, unchangeable, and has been repeatedly reaffirmed at the highest level."

"Russia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposes any form of independence for the island," he said.

"We proceed from the premise that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for the PRC (People's Republic of China). Beijing has every legitimate basis for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added.

The declaration surfaces against escalating friction between China and Japan since November 7, when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated a Chinese assault on Taiwan could legally represent a "survival-threatening situation," potentially enabling Japan to invoke collective self-defense rights.
